Who I am and why I’m here.

Avery

I am an Australian documentary filmmaker and novelist who writes to empower admiration for marginalized voices and bridge the gender divide.

As a father of two inspirational daughters, I want to reinforce reverence for the life-creating energy that brings love into the world and adds unique depth and meaning to all our lives.

My writing aims to amplify the voices that have been silenced for far too long. My commitment and passion for writing is dedicated to and inspired by my incredible daughters and the women and girls I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from during my professional career.

I have a unique history as a filmmaker, writer, and visual artist in television, theatre, drama, and current affairs, and as a storyteller my focus has been on those who have been diminished and disparaged through no fault of their own.

My visceral experience filming and working with women from all walks of life in Afghanistan, Africa, South America, Europe, and the United States has convinced me to challenge the pernicious male domination that exists in every culture across the globe.

As a novelist, I greatly admire contemporary writers such as Bonnie Garmus, Alix E Harrow, Margaret Atwood, and Hernan Diaz, who create powerful characters overcoming toxic masculinity.

As an artist, I admire story-telling painters such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edward Hopper, who make women the emotional centre of their work.

Most importantly, as a writer, I want to create an authentic voice so that the mission I share to empower admiration for those who are marginalized is understood across multiple generations and genders across the globe.

Documentary filming in  Ethiopia

In the remote mountains of Ethiopia we filmed the annual Christian Timkat festival for the Discovery Channel. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church was born about 300 years after Christ.

Edward Hopper

The American painter Edward Hopper was a major influence on me in art school. His story-telling paintings beautifully reveal reflective private worlds.

Henri Toulouse Lautrec

French artist, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, is my favourite story-teller painter of all time. A huge influence on my visual art and on my writing. He’s all about the joy of life

Documentary filming in  Afghanistan

Under the close supervision of the Taliban we filmed daily life in Afghanistan for the Discovery Channel.
