YOUNG DAD DAYS

Writer: Avery NavarroAvery Navarro

It’s my birthday in our old back yard. The baby in my lap is now an early childhood educator working with indigenous children in the central desert town of Alice Springs. Before she did her education degree she was a graduate from the National Art School, a television researcher and a publicist. Now in the desert heart of Central Australia she helps first nation children deal with the dangerous effects of extreme poverty and inadequate health care.

The little girl third on the right is now a journalist managing media for the NSW prison system. Before that she was the chief crime reporter for News Ltd. They are both mums with little boys of their own. The cycle of life is a wondrous and beautiful thing.
